Abstract

This study examines the relationship between the empowerment of the Spirit of the LORD (rûah YHWH) and Samson’s leadership character in Judges 13–16, focusing on the paradox between divine empowerment and personal failure. It employs thematic-narrative analysis of the Hebrew text and an Indonesian Bible translation through four steps: identifying explicit references to the Spirit of the LORD (Judg. 13:25; 14:6, 19; 15:14), examining the narrative context of each occurrence, comparing these episodes with the portrayal of Samson’s character and actions, and synthesizing their relationship within the overall narrative. The findings indicate that the Spirit empowers Samson for actions that contribute to the conflict against the Philistines, but such empowerment does not necessarily entail moral maturity, self-control, or relational competence. This tension becomes evident when Samson acts from personal desire and retaliation, while Israel’s deliverance remains the narrative’s broader theological framework. Samson’s final prayer demonstrates his dependence on God, but it does not provide sufficient grounds for claiming explicit repentance. The study’s contribution lies in an integrative reading that distinguishes the Spirit’s empowering function from the leader’s personal character. Thus, Samson’s paradoxical leadership demonstrates that divine sovereignty operates through a problematic leader without eliminating his moral responsibility.
